New Orleans Dream Conspirators
It may not be too late to pull this off before next Mardi Gras, but I’m going to need help.
This is the thing: I’d like to get together a walking parade group for my neighborhood called The New Orleans Dream Conspiracy. The idea is to meet at someone’s house on Mardi Gras morning (or early afternoon after Zulu) in the hood, have some beverages, costume up to the teeth and take a walk down to the French Quarter together. Musical instruments, animals, artists, aliens, banners, confetti, musicians, bubbles, freaks of all natures, rollerskates, radios, militant drug users, circus performers all are encouraged to join. We’d do a theme each year based on dream sequences or some such thing… I’m thinking, for the first year, the theme should be The Muses. Then, after that, it’s anyone’s guess.
I’m still working this idea out in my head. I know that I will definitely need help organizing. I’m not an organizer AT ALL. I can’t manage large numbers of people at once – I go into total meltdown. So please I will need someone to volunteer to herd the neighborhood folks into a coherent organism. Advertising, Web page and artwork I can do, no problem. I already set up the Web site on WordPress, just need to fill in the content now. (I’ll post the link when there’s something to see.) I’ve been doing some um… guerilla, low-fi advertising in the hood lately, so hopefully that will generate some local antiplath blog traffic. Hopefully soon, we can find out if we have enough interest to do this thing. Because I think it would be a blast. The neighborhood I live in is arguably one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the country, populated by some truly original humans – lots of artists, musicians, craftsmen, DJs… We definitely need a walking parade group! And maybe even a float. Once we get everyone together, who the hell knows what will take place?
Hit me up with a comment if you’re down. I’m going to get to work on advertising and design today.

You may run into problems with the marigny parade and we have the Mardi Gras Indians uptown. I’d be willing to get up ass early/not sleep to march to see the indians. How about our own Indian krewe?

The marigny parade is all the way on the other side of the FQ, and the Indians all have their own well-established krewes. The idea of NOLADreamConsp. is to get a bunch of artists together from the neighborhood to walk in costume, with music. There’s no conflict, as we’ll be walking down Mag without any floats. The Only other walking parade that walks down Mag at that time on Mardi Gras day is Krewe de Jew and they roll at 2PM or thereabout. Nothing says we can’t mesh with them on the way, either.

Plus the Indians are NEVER anywhere to be seen in my hood at that time of the day. They get up at the buttcrack of dawn in the 8th ward and assemble over by the Claiborne overpass. They are Indians way Uptown, but none I’ve ever seen in the LGD in the eight years I’ve lived here. And believe me, I’ve looked.
